Aitkaf, also spelled as Itikaf, is an Islamic practice of seclusion, typically performed during the last ten days of Ramadan. During Aitkaf, a person (usually a male) retreats to a mosque or a designated area for worship, reflection, and devotion to Allah. The individual engages in acts of worship such as reciting the Quran, offering prayers, making supplications, and seeking spiritual purification.
Aitkaf is considered a highly virtuous and rewarding practice in Islam. It provides an opportunity for Muslims to detach from worldly distractions, focus on spiritual growth, and seek closeness to Allah. While Aitkaf is more commonly observed by men, women can also perform it in their homes, dedicating themselves to worship and contemplation during the specified period.
The practice of Aitkaf is deeply rooted in the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who would observe Aitkaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. Many Muslims continue to follow this Sunnah (tradition) as a means of seeking spiritual rejuvenation and drawing closer to Allah during this blessed time of the year.
