Pakistan gained independence from British colonial rule on August 14, 1947. The movement for independence was led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, also known as Quaid-e-Azam, who is considered the founder of Pakistan. The country was created as a separate homeland for Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, with the principle of separate electorates and weightage of representation for Muslims.
The Indian Independence Act was passed by the British Parliament on July 18, 1947, dividing British India into two dominions: India and Pakistan. The Radcliffe Line was established as the border between the two countries.
On August 14, 1947, Pakistan was officially declared independent, with Muhammad Ali Jinnah hoisting the national flag in Karachi. The country’s independence was marked by widespread celebrations, but also by violence and mass migrations during the Partition of India.
Since then, August 14th is celebrated as Independence Day in Pakistan, with parades, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and other events across the country.
