Reema Khan Hajj Memories
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is considered one of the most significant religious pilgrimages for Muslims. It is an annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Mecca to perform the rituals of Hajj during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey. It is a demonstration of unity and equality, as Muslims from diverse backgrounds and cultures come together to fulfill this sacred obligation.
The rituals of Hajj follow the footsteps and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his last pilgrimage. The main rituals of Hajj include:
Ihram: Pilgrims enter into a state of ihram, which involves wearing specific clothing (two seamless white sheets for men) and observing certain restrictions. The state of ihram signifies purity and equality.
Tawaf: Pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba, the sacred house of worship in Mecca, seven times in a counterclockwise direction. This act symbolizes the unity of Muslims and their devotion to Allah.
Sa’i: Pilgrims walk or run seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, following the path of Hajar (Hagar), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). This ritual commemorates Hajar’s search for water in the barren desert.
Wuquf: Pilgrims gather in the plain of Arafat, where they spend the day in prayer, repentance, and seeking forgiveness from Allah. This is considered the most crucial part of Hajj.
Muzdalifah: After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, where they spend the night in open areas, collect pebbles for the next ritual, and engage in supplication.
Stoning of the Devil: Pilgrims throw pebbles at three pillars symbolizing Satan’s temptation in Mina. This act signifies rejecting evil and temptation.
Sacrifice: Pilgrims offer an animal sacrifice, usually a sheep or goat, as an act of obedience and gratitude to Allah. The meat is distributed among the needy.
Tawaf al-Ifadah: Pilgrims perform another circumambulation of the Kaaba, followed by the Sa’i between Safa and Marwa. This marks the completion of the main Hajj rituals.
Farewell Tawaf: Before leaving Mecca, pilgrims perform a final Tawaf, bidding farewell to the Kaaba.
Hajj is a profound spiritual journey that emphasizes devotion, self-reflection, unity, and submission to the will of Allah. It serves as a reminder of the equality and brotherhood/sisterhood of all Muslims, as they dress in simple garments and stand shoulder to shoulder in worship. The experience of Hajj is believed to cleanse the soul and provide an opportunity for spiritual renewal.
It is important to note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, there have been restrictions and limitations on Hajj in recent years. The Saudi government and religious authorities have implemented measures to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims. It is recommended to stay updated with the latest information and guidelines provided by the relevant authorities for those planning to perform Hajj.
